This year NHHS has something new to offer students, which would be the pep squad. New Haven High School’s pep squad are the people who have attended every game to support our Shamrock teams.
The pep squad is something that anyone in our high school can join. It's also a great way to show support to NHHS sports teams.
Head of the pep squad, Emma Engelbrecht, was asked how effective she thinks the pep squad is, she responded, “ I always just wanted the fan sections to be louder and participate. We were always able to get lots of students at the games, but it was hard to get them to actually cheer. So I figured by making an organized group that is required to cheer, it brings more energy to the games and helps the cheerleaders a lot! I think it is very effective because if the fans are yelling and get into the game, the players do as well and there have already been several players who have said how much more fun it was to play with the student section behind you! I owe a lot of thanks to Mrs. Laune for helping me get it all organized and being such a great help with it all!”
Not only do these students show up to cheer on our NHHS Shamrocks, they also went the extra mile and made shirts. These shirts were available to everyone who joined the squad. The shirts are white, black, and green and have the quote “Love us or fear us, either way you're gonna hear us.”
Member of the pep squad, Liz Hughes, said, “Being a part of such a high-spirited group really makes me proud to call myself a Shamrock!”
Brooklyn Covington, player on the girls varsity team, always makes sure to be at the boys’ games to cheer New Haven’s teams on. She said, “I’m so glad we brought back the pep squad. I think it's a great way to support our NHHS Shamrocks!”
According to the students, it’s not just something the players look forward to. Taylor Oetterer, senior at NHHS, comments, “The pep squad is a great way to spread school spirit through the entire high school!”
Mr. Hoener, superintendent of New Haven High School, was asked what his views on the pep squad were, and he replied, “I am for any activity that increases student involvement in our school. I am excited that students took the initiative to create a new club and look forward to seeing it grow.”
The high school’s pep squad is something that has become a tradition and is sure to last. This is why New Haven High School is known for its “Tradition of Excellence”.
