Getting into the fall months, the weather isn't the only thing that changes. New sports seasons for New Haven are just beginning, one being basketball. Basketball is one of the many sports New Haven offers, and, like any sport, one the community looks forward to.
New Haven boys’ basketball team began practicing on October 31st. At this time, they are beginning their preparation for their upcoming games.
Every practice is a learning experience for every player. New Haven’s basketball players are always looking to improve so they are able to make the best of each season.
When John Fleer was asked how he feels about the basketball season starting, his response was, “I'm excited to see what this season has to offer and to see overall, as a team, how we have improved.” Last year the boys’ basketball team had a 5-22 win to loss ratio.
Along with the boys, the girls’ basketball team has also kicked off their season with their first practice on October 31st. It is said that confidence is key, and according to McKenzie Overschmidt, these girls definitely have it. When she was asked what outcome she is expecting from the season, she exclaimed, “With the players we have this year I’m expecting to win a lot of games and go to state!” Last season, the girls had a 15-13 win to loss ratio.
The players aren't the only ones excited for the basketball season. Aaron Peirick, coach of New Haven boys’ basketball team, was asked what his thoughts on the upcoming season are, and he responded with, “We have a pretty exciting opportunity in front of us this year. So far, we have had leaders come forward and we have had guys leave their comfort zone; both as far as effort and the roles they need to play for us this year. We have plenty of different pieces as far as personnel goes.“
He continued by saying, “I think we have more depth than we have had here lately. We have some size, some length, and some quickness which help our cause a little bit. I think if we can stay out of our own way mentally, we can accomplish some good things. We have a long way to go to reach our full potential, but I think that this group can get there. ”
Doug Peirick, coach of New Haven girls’ basketball team, was also asked about his thoughts on the upcoming season, and his response was, “I think we have a lot of talent, and we are going to be able to do a lot of good things as long as we stay healthy, because we don't have a lot of depth.”
The response of the girls’ basketball team, boys’ basketball team, and their coaches tells us we have a lot of great things to expect from the 2016/2017 basketball season of New Haven High School.
