New Haven High School class of 2014 graduate Rachel Steinhoff shot perfectly from 3-point range, but the Truman State Bulldogs fell to the Missouri Lady Tigers, 87-53 Monday night at Mizzou Arena in Columbia. Truman’s only lead of the game came after Brooke Bailey’s (Dixon, Illinois) 3-pointer, 31 seconds into the first quarter.
Senior Cassidy Clark (Coal Valley, Illinois) led the Bulldogs in scoring with 11 and 1 assist. Steinhoff chipped in 10 points, shooting 75% from the field and 3 for 3 from 3-point range. 2014 Hermann High School graduate Jamie Gleeson did not crack the scoring column, but logged 11 minutes of playing time.
Leading the way for Mizzou was sophomore Sophie Cunningham (Columbia, Missouri) with 22 points. Senior Lianna Doty (St. Louis, Missouri) led the way in rebounding with 13 rebounds. Senior Sierra Michaelis (Mercer, Missouri) shot 50% from the field and 40% from 3-point range.
Steinhoff commented on Truman’s performance stating, “We knew going into the game that they would be bigger and more athletic. We were prepared for the speed and physicality, but I think this got in our head a little bit. Especially in the 1st half, we played too safe.”
She continued by saying, “We recognized the challenge it would be, but kind of shied away from that and lost our attack mentality. When we finally relaxed, we were only outscored by 8 points in the 2nd half. Overall, it was just a fun experience and atmosphere, and we came away with a better understanding of who we are as a team and what step to take next.”
Regarding playing with former Four Rivers Conference rival Jamie Gleeson, Steinhoff also quoted that, “Playing with Jamie and not against her has been an awesome experience. In high school, I always admired her athleticism and how hard she was willing to work for her team. She knows how to compete and plays to win. She does the same thing for us every single day, whether it be in the weight room, in conditioning, or on the court. These next 2 years should be fun playing alongside her.”
After going 0-2 in their 2 exhibition games, Truman State begins regular season play on Saturday, November 12 at Northern Michigan with tipoff set for 7:30 P.M.
Good luck to Rachel and the Truman Bulldogs this season!
