Homework? More Like “No”mework

3/23/2015

Homework? Why would anyone want to do homework when there is Netflix, napping, or doing absolutely anything else? Welcome to the world of procrastination, where hobbies come first, and homework comes dead last. Most people procrastinate something in some way, although homework seems to be the most common among teens. The majority of students at New Haven High admit that they most definitely procrastinate.
When asked why they procrastinate, the majority of students said something similar to Beth Schenk’s response: “I don't feel like doing what I'm supposed to be doing.” It’s a pretty basic answer, and most students just don’t want to do the work. Cole Lensing and Kayla Watson said the exact same thing when asked, which was, “I’m lazy.” Some students may not do homework just because they don’t want to; others procrastinate with good reasons. Emma Engelbrecht said, “I procrastinate to relieve myself of stress; for example, on nights when I get a lot of homework, I do what I can and put the rest off so I don't overwhelm myself.” Although people feel as though procrastination is a helpful option, it usually ends up causing stress and anxiety.

What would students rather do than homework? The majority responded with Netflix, sleeping, or hanging out with friends. Cortanie Gale would rather be playing with her dog or horse or doing “anything to avoid what I’m really supposed to be doing.” Dominick Pataky said he would rather “obtain currency,” also known as working. Students may think that there are more important things than getting their work done, but there usually isn’t.

With procrastination comes a lot of negative health issues. According to stopprocrastinationinfo.org, it can lead to serious amounts of anxiety and stress. People also tend to be sleep deprived from procrastinating, either staying up late to do their work or up all night pondering whether or not they will complete the work on time. Procrastination definitely negatively affects one’s life.

Procrastination may be very common, but there are also ways around it. Some students had really good advice to help out high schoolers. Julianna Parsons said that students could try dividing up the work they need to accomplish in smaller portions, with short breaks in between. If work has to be procrastinated, this is probably the best solution.

Procrastination may seem like the best option, but most New Haven students said they usually regret procrastinating because it causes too much stress. Most students can agree that they do most definitely procrastinate, but they know  it’s not the best option!
