While some students are making their Labor Day weekend plans, others are tightening their spikes and running their watches. For 24 New Haven High School athletes, Saturday, September 5th signals the start of racing season.
This year will be one of the biggest cross-country teams that New Haven has had in a long time. Coach John Tucker states, “It’s difficult trying to field a girl’s team because of the other sports that occur during our season, so it’s nice to see 6 girls come out. I’m really excited to have 18 guys run with us. I think athletes come in waves, which caused us to have high numbers this year.”
Last year’s cross country team was the first to bring two teams to state, with a fourth place trophy win on the boy’s side. This year’s goal is to not only have both teams qualify for state, but as Coach Tucker reminds us, to also “keep on improving.”
During the race, you can catch a glimpse of competitors cheering on their opponents.
Coach Tucker describes the atmosphere as a significant aspect of a meet. “Cross-Country is addictive. People don’t realize how fun it is. The environment of a meet is just filled with enthusiasm and encouragement. The crowd realizes what amazing things these kids are going out there to do and they respect them for that. Which is why I think sportsmanship is so visible at a meet.”
The Short Course Invitational on September 5th in New Haven will be a great opportunity to see how these runners compete. The first race will begin at 8:30 am. Sport your green while cheering on both the middle school and high school cross-country teams!
