Got A Cheap Date?

2/10/2015

How often do you go out on a date? If you’re a girl, do you expect the guy to pay for everything? It doesn’t have to be super expensive, but when it is, how much will a person spend in order to impress that special someone? On the other hand, how little do you spend for the simple dates, $5, $10, or just gas?

Here in New Haven, there isn’t a lot to do given there aren’t a lot of places a person would typically take another out on a date. If one has a car and can drive, the variety opens up! 38% of the NHHS students that were polled said that their favorite place to go on a date is the movies, and 30% of the students said they like to go out to eat for a date. The people that selected going to the movies said that they only spend around $20-$30. The cheapest date high schoolers have been on was going to McDonald’s. Erica Kotthoff agreed, saying, “Going to McDonald’s, and ordering from the $1 menu.” According to some students at NHHS, a person doesn’t have to spend money for it to be a date.

Some people may not think of this as a date, but a few poll respondents  said their cheapest date was staying home with their significant other to “just hang out.” 18% of the students polled said this was the cheapest date. Paige Adams, who enjoys staying home anyway, described, “Just stay[ing] home with some snacks and watching a Netflix marathon,” as her cheapest date. Other people like to stay  close to home by going to the Walt Theater downtown to catch a movie. 12% of the students  answered with the Walt as their cheapest date. Each ticket at the Walt is only $5, so if a person has a ten dollar bill, they can at least pay for admission. Most commonly, students polled felt that the guy should be the one supplying the money for the date.

Most of the responders that took the poll were girls and said that they shouldn’t have to pay for a date, or they don’t pay at all. Tenille Duessler was one of the girls that said this, and she also stated, “All my guys are cheap, and I’ve never paid for a date.” Tenille’s dates may be “cheap,” but the guys that do spend some money seem to go all out.

Speaking of “big spenders” here at New Haven High, there are a few. None of them went over $100, but anywhere close to that can be considered expensive. Michael McKernan said that he took a girl to Busch Stadium and had to pay $85. John Wintjen also spent quite a bit of money on his date by bringing her to the Cheesecake Factory and spending exactly $72.86. These boys also had to drive their dates all the way out to St. Louis. Paying for gas adds to the price of a date.  Depending on what type of car a person drives, they could spend anywhere from $5 to $35 on gas just to go out! If a person adds the $20 for a meal and the $10 for gas money, they are spending quite a bit of money on their special someone.

Even if it’s a stay-at-home-and-watch-a-movie date, or a going-out-to-see-a-movie date, there will be some sort of cost. Are you going to go all out just to impress your date or just sit at home with them and eat snacks and watch movies? Whatever your choice of a date is, cheap or expensive, the girl--if she’s from NHHS--will probably not expect to pay for anything.
