On Friday, the 26th, the Shamrock girls defeated Chamois, 56-35, for 3rd place in the Hermann Tournament. The following afternoon, the boys fell to Hermann 44-40 in overtime for 7th place.
In the girls’ contest, seniors Emily Scheer and Lauren Gerlemann were the top 2 scorers, with 14 and 13 respectively. Fellow senior Emma Engelbrecht led the Shamrocks in rebounding with 9.
In the boys’ contest, senior John Fleer led all scorers with 14, followed by junior Ethan Groner with 13. Fleer also led the Shamrocks in rebounding with 7.
Reflecting on the girls’ performance, head coach Doug Peirick commented, “I thought we played very well. We put pressure on their ball handlers, and didn’t let their shooters get any good looks at the basket in the first half. Our offense was also really good. We were able to get and make our open shots. We played with high intensity, and came out with the win. It is always nice to get at least 2 wins in a tournament and to bring home a trophy.”
Scheer also commented on the girls’ performance, stating, “We came out with great intensity and enthusiasm that guided us to a strong lead in the first half. Our defense and rebounding were really good, and I think that momentum carried over to the offensive side. We didn’t let up, kept working hard, and came out with a solid win.”
Commenting on the boys’ performance, Coach Aaron Peirick stated, “Another game where we were right there with a chance to win. We just fell a play or two short. I thought John played very well on both ends of the court. Ethan hit a huge 3 to send us to overtime. Aiden had a pretty big defensive play to end regulation. We’re playing good enough to win, we just need to make one or two more plays and we win.”
The girls’ next game will be Monday, the 5th, against St.Clair, and the boys’ next game will be Tuesday, the 6th. Please note that, on the 6th, Senior Night will also be observed.
