On Friday, February 26, the New Haven girls basketball season came to an end. The girls’ last game was against the Clopton Hawks, in the class 2 district 4 championship game at Crystal City.
The varsity team ended their season with 15 wins and 13 losses, and the junior varsity ended their season with 11 wins and 8 losses.
Varsity girls coach Mr. Doug Peirick stated, “We had an up and down season overall, but we improved as the season went on. We got better each game, losing some close games to some really good teams. The girls were focused everyday in practice, and it showed in their play on game night.”
The girls believed they had a very successful season, even though they didn’t win all the games they hoped for.
Emma Borcherding pronounced, “I believe our team did way better then last year. I think we worked really hard all season and kept growing as the season progressed. We all had a lot of fun on and off the court and really enjoyed what we were doing.”
When the varsity players were asked about if they could change anything about their season, almost of all of them said they would change the outcome of the district championship game.
Varsity captain Erin Scheer was a little disappointed in the district game loss. She said, “That [district win] was something I'd really dreamed about and wanted. Being able to have gotten an district championship with my sister would have been really special to me.”
On the other hand, a few girls had a remarkable season this year. Lauren Gerlemann made the South Callaway All Tournament Team, First Team All Conference, and All District Team. Emily Scheer made Second Team All Conference and All District Team. Erin Scheer and Maddie Fleer also made All District Team.
The girls would like to thank the community, fans, school, cheerleaders, managers, and coaches for all the support this season.
Congratulations to the girls basketball team on their dedicated season!
