Fun With Ice

2/17/2015

On February 8, 2015, New Haven High School’s National Honor Society took a field trip to Washington Park’s indoor ice skating arena and later went for ice cream at Central Dairy in Jefferson City.
The NHS members met at the high school at noon. The trip consisted of five NHS members, Mrs. Oelrichs, her husband, and their two kids. The NHS members rode with Mrs. Oelrichs in her car, while her husband and kids rode in a separate vehicle. Along the way, there was some teacher-student bonding time. The conversations consisted of some school events such as prom and the senior trip.

When the group arrived at Washington Park, they each paid  for their skates and then hit the ice skating rink. When they got on the ice, some members noticed their skates were too big, so they went back and switched them. Once they came back on the ice, Megan Shockley, Courtney Yowell, and Mackenzy Vedder skated without a problem. But, when it came to Emily Moreno and Jennifer Alvarez, skating was a bit more difficult since it was their first time. Once they got the hang of it, though, nothing could stop them.  After a while the NHS members decided it was time for ice cream.

When they arrived at Central Dairy, everyone had to stand in a line that was all the way outside the building. The members figured it was going to be full since it was a nice day for ice cream. That didn’t stop them, though. They weren’t going to leave without their ice cream. After a few minutes, the line got smaller and smaller, and the members finally ordered and headed for the door. Mackenzy Vedder and Megan Shockley both got cookie dough, while Jennifer Alvarez and Emily Moreno got cookies n’ cream. Courtney Yowell got her own chocolate mousse flavor.

When the members that attended were asked about the trip, they had a few things to say:

Mackenzy Vedder commented, “I liked getting ice cream from Central Dairy the best. It didn’t go the way I expected; I thought there would be more people, but I would do it again.”

Megan Shockley said, “My favorite part of the trip was Central Dairy. I expected more people to go, but otherwise I would definitely go again.”

Courtney Yowell exclaimed, “What I liked the most about the trip was going to Central Dairy after we were done ice skating. I think it went better than expected because I didn’t fall once. I would definitely go again because it was fun, but I would bring more socks that had more cushion.”

After a day of ice skating and getting ice cream, the members of NHS took a nap on the way back home from their fun filled day!
