A former Franklin County Deputy and his family were visiting with the Sheriff at the time and were made aware of the dispatch. While returning home, the ex-deputy and his family observed a truck at the intersection of Hwy 47 and 50 North. The truck turned east on Hwy 50 and had markings stating Madison County Highway Department.
Approximately 45 minutes later, a Franklin County Deputy spotted the suspect vehicle traveling South on Hwy 185 from Sullivan. The deputy began to follow the vehicle confirming that the vehicle was stolen.
Washington County Deputies were contacted and deployed spike strips near Hwy K and Hwy 185. As the suspect vehicle approached, the Franklin County Deputy activated his emergency lights and the suspect vehicle fled crossing the spikes. The suspect vehicle drove a short distance and crashed in to a tree. The driver fled in to the woods.
A search of the area began with multiple law enforcement agencies. Weather conditions and the remote area have hampered the search. The search continues.
The second escapee, in custody for murder, was arrested in the Madison County area. The individual observed in Franklin County is identified as Jason Mills, a white male, age 38. He was incarcerated on charges of tampering, resisting arrest, assault 3rd, and weapons charges. His photo is attached. It is anticipated that Mills will attempt to seal a second vehicle in that area. Local residents are requested to be extra vigilant and report any suspicious activity to Franklin or Washington County Sheriff’s Offices.
