Everyone Can Be Kind

5/5/2015

“There are three ways to ultimate success: The first way is to be kind. The second way is to be kind. The third way is to be kind.” This quote is by the famous Fred Rogers, who is known for his generous soul. He promoted only positivity to the world, and more people should strive to be like him.

Being pleasant to be around is rewarding to everyone involved. For example, imagine an individual is having a bad day. If you spare a moment of your day to console that person, his or her day could be made better. All it would take is for you to give a listening ear. Sure, you can’t help everyone around you, but a small smile can go a long way. Your shine will rub off on others, then rub off on people that they meet, and so on.

One of the most important aspects in life is building relationships. According to a Huffington Post article, “Today, when we are kind to each other, we feel a connection, and new relationships are forged, or existing ones strengthened.”

An example of building relationships is when YouTube personality Rahat Hossain decided to pull a “prank” on one homeless man. The homeless man, named Eric had his entire life changed by a random act of kindness. He gave the man a fake winning lottery ticket and took him into a gas station--the store clerk had been on the prank. When Eric was handed the $1,000, the first thing he said to Rahat was,”I want to share it, my friend,” but Rahat insisted that he keep it. This brought Eric to tears--just small gesture brought one man so much happiness.

After the video went  viral with millions of views and shares, people from all over the world started raising money for this man who was down on his luck. Over $44,000 was raised in less than a week. So, Rahat set up a living situation, with the rent paid for a year, a bank account, furniture, utilities, clothing, and food. One man’s kind heart inspired thousands to donate and to get a struggling individual on his feet. Now, Eric has a job and is inspired by so many people’s giving hearts. Eric’s words to the world were, “I thank you from the bottom of my heart. I thank you for sticking with me and for believing in me.”

Alison Long, a sophomore here at NHHS, has been on the giving end of kindness. “Everyday I try to be the best person I can. It’s just something that I feel like is important.” One day, Alison and her aunt were feeling particularly good-natured and decided to perform a random act of kindness. While going through the drive-thru at McDonald’s, they paid for the elderly couple’s meal in the vehicle behind them. Alison contemplated on this event, “It felt really nice to do something for complete strangers; I really hope they passed on the act!” This may have not happened on Random Act of Kindness Day, February 17, but the day is celebrated just by donating random acts of kindness to others. Popular acts include buying lunch for a pal, sending a handwritten thank you note, or even share your smile with the world.

It may seem unrealistic to constantly be kind, but like the Dalai Lama once said, “Be kind whenever possible. It is always possible.” Opening the door for someone, sending a thank you note, or even walking a friend’s dog at a random time are acts that only take a moment, but those on the receiving end of your generosity will never forget.

In today’s world, it’s easy to get into the motion of life, and it can be easy to forget about those around you, but doing good makes you feel good. Your kind heart can be rewarding to you and those whom you deliver it to. So, the next time you are stuck in your daily motion, do something Mr. Rogers would be proud of.
