Dreaming of the Future

12/5/2014

During high school the counselor always encourages students to plan for their futures. Mr. Doug Pierick, New Haven High school counselor, explains, “They should do their research about how much education is needed to acquire their career.” When thinking of a job, students should think about what they like, what they are interested in, and what they are good at. Mr. Pierick continued to explain, “they should also try to talk to someone in that career and find out all they can about that particular job. Job shadowing is also a very good thing to do,” Mr. Pierick suggested.
Researching a career could lead to a bright future. For example, Hannah Pruessner, a senior at New Haven High School, said, “I plan to attend Missouri State University for 4 years to achieve my Bachelors degree and enter the workforce as an RN.  After working in the field for a few years, I plan to go back to school to get my masters or doctorate as a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner.’  Another senior, Erica Kotthoff, said, “Going to St. Charles Community College to get my prerequisites and then doing University of Missouri- St. Louis accelerated program.” Erica Kotthoff continued with, “I love dealing with kids, and I think this would be very rewarding.”  Both Hannah and Erica are very passionate about helping others, and hope to pursue that in their future.

Clearly, it is important for people to have a passion for their careers. Emma Engelbrecht says that she wants to be a volleyball coach for New Haven High School. She explained, “This is my dream job because volleyball is my passion, and I want to teach it to others at New Haven and carry on the tradition of excellence.”

Mr. Doug Pierick said, “I feel that students should definitely plan for future careers.” With a plan, and a thought of what you should be, you can accomplish what you dream.
