Connecting the World--It’s a Good Thing

3/9/2015

Some people are starting to believe that social networks and electronic devices are taking over our youth. Many people make it seem like social networks are bad, but there are also good elements when it comes to social networking sites.
Receiving the news faster is a helpful reason why people use social networking. According to Social Networking Procon.org, over 50% of people that have and use social media are receiving the news as fast as it is happening. 65% of reporters and editors use Facebook as a way of finding new material to write about, and the other 52% use Twitter. Social media is the second most-used resource for receiving news. 28.8% of Americans are using the old fashion newspaper, 27.8% are using social media, 18.8% are using the radio, and finally, 6% percent using some other source of print news. Statistics show that people are receiving the news quicker. People are becoming more involved with what is going on in the world. These statistics show that people all over are using other resources such as newspapers, magazines, and the radio less than before. This proves that social media has made an impact on people and their choice of how they will receive the news.

Furthermore, according to Social Networking Procon.org, 59% of students with access to the internet use social networking sites to do their homework, and  50% use social networking sites to discuss their assignments. At Georgia Middle School in Portland, Oregon, they introduced a networking site to help their students bring their grades up. Grades for the students went up by 50%. Chronic absenteeism went down by 33%. 20% of students school-wide voluntarily did extra credit. These numbers show that this networking site improved their students’ way of understanding and brought up their grades quite a bit.

As stated on Social Networking Procon.org, improving relationships and making new friends is another way that social media can help people. Social networking can connect people faster and help people that have family that live far away. 70% of adults use social media to keep in contact with friends and family. Teens that use these sites say it has greatly improved their relationship with friends. Due to most of the world having access to a social website, people can be connected to others without spending a fortune to visit them for a few days. With the touch of a button, everyone can stay connected with people that they know, and they can also meet new people through others.

Although social media may have its rough moments, there are many good outcomes when it comes to using a social network. Why talk negatively about connecting with one another when anyone can explore the world with a touch of a button?
