On Tuesday, November 11, the Student Council at New Haven High School treated veterans to breakfast as a way to say thanks to the veterans for serving our country. In fact, New Haven School District is privileged enough to have three veterans working for the district. Amy Schenck, the central office secretary, was in the Air Force; head day-time custodian Bob Bratcher was in the Coast Guard, and custodian Russ Gilig was in the Army. When asked about the breakfast, Amy responded, “I thought it was great, and there was a good turn out.” Amy enjoyed getting to talk to the other veterans about their experiences with the military. |
The veterans were treated to eggs, cinnamon rolls, potato wedges, fruit salad, and coffee, which was prepared by the high school kitchen staff.
“It was nice to sit and enjoy breakfast with fellow veterans. The students did a nice job preparing the food,” said Veteran Jim Clines.
“It brought a smile to my face to see the Veterans enjoying each others company at breakfast,” stated Student Council representative Erica Kotthoff.
After breakfast, the veterans traveled to the elementary school where they enjoyed a “Thank You” assembly from the elementary kids. Following the assembly, the veterans lined up around the gym, and the elementary students had the privilege to walk around and shake their hands.
On behalf of New Haven High, thank you to everyone who helped make Veterans Day a success and most of all thank you to the veterans for their service to our country.
