Braids are Back!

1/22/2015

According to dictionary.com, “A trend is usually defined as something that is going in a general direction in which it is developing or changing.” Braids are an unusual example of a trend, though.
According to lovelyish.com, “Hairstyles come and go, but braided hair is an ancient beauty technique.” Yourstylistaj.com says, “braids have been around since 3000 B.C.”  They are not the true definition of a trend because they have always been around; however, they are more popular now, which makes them trendy. Braids are a huge trend for more than one reason. First of all, braids can enhance facial features. Braids also help to pull  hair back with style. Not only is the braid a hairstyle, but it is also a way to keep long hair manageable and prevent stray hairs from flying away. While someone might think that braids are just for women, they  are also used by men. Braids don’t stop with just humans, either, believe it or not. The tail of a horse can sometimes be braided. Additionally, companies make dolls with long hair that little kids can play with and practice braiding

There are many different types of braids that can be done in hair. Just a few types are the French braid, fishtail, five strand, four strand, and the standard three strand braid that is most commonly known.

A famous type of braid is, of course, the French braid, or as it has recently been called, the “Elsa braid.” The Elsa braid comes from the movie Frozen. This French braid brings all of the hair away from the face. People like this type of braid a lot because there are many different things that can be done with it. For example, hair can be French braided all the way to the ends, or one could just French braid bangs into a smooth ponytail. French braids are my favorite type of braid because they look beautiful and are fast and easy to do.

Another very common braid is the fishtail. This type of braid is as easy as dividing all of the hair into two strands, taking a piece from one strand, and crossing it under the other strand. The fishtail is not as common as the French braid, but it is loved by many and used for the same reason: the convenience and beauty.

A few students at NHHS were asked what kind of braid was their favorite and why. Junior Maddie Fleer explained, “French braid because it keeps all my hair back.” Senior Mackenzy Vedder answered with, “My favorite type of braid is the fishtail braid because it is pretty.” As can be seen by those two different opinions, braids can be used and loved for different reasons. While Maddie Fleer loves the French braid because of the convenience and Mackenzy Vedder loves the fishtail because of the beauty, someone else might love a different type a braid for both of those reasons, or something else entirely.

Braids also have more than one purpose. While most people use braids as a fast and easy way to get their hair out of their face, others braid their hair for the end result. Braiding hair when it is wet or damp and leaving it in for a while or overnight will result in beautiful, natural waves in the hair without using any hot hair appliances that could cause damage.

Even though braids have always been around, it is clearly noticeable that braids are more popular now because of all of the different things that can be done with them. They can be worn for any occasion. Hair could be designed with a braid for a night out on the town, a sports practice, school, or just for laying around the house. Braids do not follow the traditional definition of a trend because they are so popular that they have never really gone away completely; they just seem to shine at all different times. It appears that they are shining pretty bright right now.
