The volleyball squad this year has some high expectations--last year the volleyball team went to state and placed fourth. With the first game just around the corner, Head Coach Mrs. Jaime Hoener was asked how she feels about this year’s team.
The members of the varsity team have been going to open gyms all summer in preparation of the upcoming season. They have also been frequenting the weight room and doing conditioning. The girls have attended both the Licking summer camp, a summer tournament where many schools compete together, and the New Haven Volleyball Camp.
There are many new players to the varsity team. Maddie Fleer, Kathy Jasper, Dakota Schroeder, Kim Hoffmann, Kate Ruediger, and Emma Engelbrecht will all be playing varsity for the first time this year. “We're a little young so we might not be as consistent at the beginning of the season as we would like to be,” Coach Hoener noted. “Hopefully, we'll be playing our best by the end of October.”
Veterans Erin Scheer, Emma Borcherding, Ereka Bailey, and Lauren Bergner will also be a part of the team.
The girls have hopes to be conference and state champions, which doesn’t seem to be such a far fetched goal. This is the same team of players that went undefeated on JV for the first time in New Haven history during their sophomore year two years ago. “Playing at the varsity level is a completely different thing than playing at the JV level,” Coach Hoener stated. “That being said, these girls know how to win.”
Good luck girls!
