On October 25th, New Haven High School’s Chemistry II class hosted a private Halloween show. This was to entertain the fourth grade classes from New Haven Elementary School and Franklin County R-II School. The show consisted of chemical reactions, deathly fireballs, and thrilling explosions!
This show is a tradition of Mrs. Wendy Oelrichs’ Chemistry II class. Every year, there is a unique theme that is sure to delight the fourth graders! This year’s theme included an evil villain, Gru, from Despicable Me and two of his evil minions. These villains used a certain chemical reaction to trap all of the fourth graders on the moon! They had to rely on the heroes to use their chemistry knowledge to help them get enough energy on the escape-o-meter to get them back to Earth!
Some of the fourth graders were asked what their thoughts of the show were. Evie Jarchow, from New Haven Elementary, responded, “I loved it!”, along with Morgan Guehne who added, “It was awesome!” Fourth graders from Franklin County R-II Elementary were asked what their favorite part of the show was, and Leslie Gerlemann exclaimed, “The pumpkin [explosion] at the end!” Isabell Groner followed by saying that her favorite part was “[the experiment] where the green stuff was coming out!”
Mrs. Oelrichs was asked what her reasoning is for starting such an event, and she explained, “The Halloween show is a tradition that was actually started by the teacher who preceded me, Mr. Hibbard. When I began teaching, Mrs. Meyer asked me if I'd be continuing the tradition. It sounded like a great way for the Chemistry II students to share their knowledge and show younger students how much fun science can be, so I told her we would!” New Haven High School’s chemistry student Taylor Oetterer, who was one of the students involved in the show, was asked about her favorite part of this event, and her response was, “Probably seeing the excitement from all of the fourth graders every time a new experiment was performed!”
Overall, the reactions from the fourth graders made this traditional Halloween show another spooktacular success!
