Looking Back: Shamrocks’ Cross Country Season
Written by Jacob Preus

The 2025 New Haven Shamrocks Cross-Country season was an exciting time for the students who participated. The runners on the boys' Varsity team included three freshmen, three sophomores, and a junior. They were Easton Bailey, Oscar Otten, Jacob Preus, Evan Scheer, Cooper Groppe, Peyton Valley, and Ethan Hale. The only boy who ran jv and varsity was James O’Fallon. The girls' cross-country team included one freshman and two sophomores. They were Riley Dukes, Elliana Gevers, and Tymber Hawkins.

Going in, they weren’t sure what type of team this would be, but three races in, things were looking promising. At the first race of the year, at the New Haven Invitational, Easton Bailey had a 20:05 5k time. Cooper Groppe had a time of 24:52. Ethan Hale got 24:16. James O’Fallon (who ran for jv) had a time of 27:21. Oscar Otten’s time was 21:01. Jacob Preus’ time was 22:02. Evan Scheer’s time was 23:09. Peyton Valley’s time was 20:56. For the girl’s team, Riley Dukes’ time was 32:00. Eliana Gevers’ time was 31:24. Tymber Hawkin’s time was 30:42.  At Tolton Catholic Invitational, the Missouri State course, almost everybody had a personal record.

The third race was a small but exciting turning point for the season, when they won a second-place plaque at Belle, and several kids medaled. Easton got fourth with a time of 18:45, Oscar got eighth with a time of 19:38, Peyton got ninth, with a time of 19:48, and Ethan got fifteenth, with a time of 20:11. Jacob fell just short of medaling, getting twenty-first place, with a time of 20:41. Evan’s time was 21:03, Cooper’s time was 22:39, and James’ time was 27:34. Riley’s time was 28:21, Elianas’ time was 28:30, and Tymber’s time was 27:02.

The following race was St. James. Their course is very flat, and most runners get a personal record or season best on it. That was the case for 9 runners on this team. Three athletes medaled, including Easton who got ninth and whose time was 18:25, Peyton, who got eleventh with a time of 19 minutes flat, and Oscar, who got fifteenth with a time of 19:24. Next was Jacob with a time of 19:30. Ethan, whose time was 19:50. Evan had a time of 20:28. Cooper had a time of 22:30. James had a time of 25:34. Riley had a time of 29:35, Elliana had a time of 28:14, and Tymber had a time of 27:09.

Owensville was a rough race for most of the team, except Easton, who medaled and got fifteenth. The conference meet was at the same course, and the team did better than the first time. Fatima was a tough race for the team. It was very hilly, but they responded with confidence and had a very good race, especially considering they were missing their fifth runner, Ethan Hale, due to injury. Easton medaled at fifteenth place, with a time of 19:01. The best part was that, besides the hilly course, Oscar had a personal record of 19:23.

Finally, the Shamrocks were at districts. They had one chance not only to get to State, but to win the district meet. It was a close race, but they finished fourth, barely clinching a spot to state. Evan Scheer had a personal record of 20:12, taking his spot as the fourth runner in the race. Oscar Otten also set yet another personal record with a time of 19:11 and medaled, finishing twenty-fourth. Cooper Groppe had a season-best 22:22, and Easton medaled at tenth place. With these accomplishments from those runners, the Shamrocks were now at state.

At the MSHSAA Cross Country Class 1 State Championships, the Shamrocks set two personal records and a season best. Tymber Hawkins, the girls' state qualifying runner for the Shamrocks, had a time of 26:27. Easton Bailey had a personal record with a time of 18:07. Cooper Groppe had a season best 22:17. Ethan Hale had a time of 20:21. Oscar Otten had a personal record. His time was 18:46. Jacob Preus’ time was 20:15, his best time since Hermann. Evan Scheer’s time was 20:12, and Peyton Valley’s time was 19:27. The Shamrocks placed thirteenth at State, a fitting way to top off the season.

The season best, for each runner goes as follows: Riley Dukes, 28:15. Elliana Gevers, 28:14. Tymber Hawkins, 25:20. Easton Bailey, 18:07. Cooper Groppe, 22:17. Ethan Hale, 19:50. James O’Fallon, 24:28. Oscar Otten, 18:46. Jacob Preus, 19:30. Evan Scheer, 20:12. Peyton Valley, 19:00. The Team average for each runner’s season best was 27:16. The best team average was at State, with a time of 26:27. The second highest was at Districts, with a time of 27:01. All races were 5,000 meters, or 3.1 miles. Through all of the nerves, races, and bad times, they persevered and came out with a good race at state for everyone across the board. It’s truly a hard thing to do every week, but it’s very inspiring, and we hope to see all of them run track this spring.
