Each year, Mrs. Oelrichs, New Haven’s chemistry, physical science, and physics teacher, has students from the chemistry classes bring in a white cotton t-shirt that they will be dyeing with color dye.
Mrs. Oelrichs has stated the students will be dyeing t-shirts over the next week or two, starting when they come back from their Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.
When asked why she chose to tie-dye with her chemistry classes, Mrs. Oelrichs said, “I like to tie-dye with my chemistry classes because there is a lot of chemistry that happens during the process. We mainly learn about how the dye attaches to the fabric molecules and why the different dyes appear to be different colors.”
She has stated her favorite and least favorite moments of the project by saying, “My favorite part is seeing all the creative designs and color combinations my students come up with. The second day, when we open up the shirts to rinse them, is especially fun! My least favorite part is how extensive the set up and clean up processes are.”
Every year, the Chemistry 2 class tie-dyes a piece of white fabric that they have sewn into a curtain panel by one of Mrs. Miller's students. Each member of the class signs it, and she hangs it up in her classroom. Each year the curtains rotate so she can have the curtains made by the last four classes of Chem 2 seniors hanging in her windows. It's a fun tradition!
When asked how they felt about tie-dying, senior Diana Ribera exclaimed, “It was so much fun! I have never tie-dyed so it was slightly nerve-wracking since I thought it wouldn’t turn out well.”
Junior Bernabe Ribera stated, “I felt like it wasn’t going to go well because we needed a 100% cotton shirt and mine wasn’t. Turns out mine was one of the best ones so, yeet!”
When questioned how they liked their shirts, senior Mikayla Maloney said, “I really liked the outcome of my shirt because the pink and blue spiral looked awesome!”
Junior Lydia Otten stated, “It turned out not like I expected, but in a good way. The orange washed out so it turned into a peachy color, but it brought all the colors together.”
Junior Grace Allgaier said, “It definitely didn't turn out like I wanted. Sadly, the orange washed out, so that was a bummer.”
Great job to all the students that tie-dyed! Hope all the shirts turned out amazing!
