Students reflect on dual-credit courses

9/11/2018

By: Grace Allgaier

Out of all the classes that can be taken at New Haven High School, some students choose to take college dual-credit classes. These classes are offered to juniors and seniors only and can be taken through Drury University or East Central College.  Some of the dual-credit classes that students can take here are Algebra, Psychology and Sociology, English Composition 1, US History, and College World History.

Students taking dual-credit courses at Drury and ECC said that they enjoyed taking the classes.

When asked about her experience with Drury, Kamryn Poe, a New Haven senior, said, “So far it has been really great. The teachers are really nice and understanding as well.”

Callie Weatherly, a current senior, is taking classes with both schools; however, she prefers Drury over ECC.

When asked why, she replied with, “ECC’s class set up is a bit hectic and hard to get used to, but the class is good so far. There were a few setbacks at first due to communication errors between the high school and ECC, but it was all worked out. The Drury classes are a lot more straightforward and easier to navigate around, which I love very much.”

According to these students, most of them are taking these classes because they are interested in the subject or getting the classes out of the way before college.  However, there are other reasons students like to take these classes. For example, many of the students like them because they can work at their own pace.

Miranda Durbin, another senior at New Haven, said that during the class periods she typically bounces from class to class and tries to get as much done as possible. Most of the students report that they try to focus on finishing their work from these classes in the time they are given at school.

Overall, students taking these dual-credit classes like both of the schools that offer them. Most say that the websites are easy to access. All of them, however, would recommend doing dual-credit classes.

Good luck to all of those taking dual-credit!
