Jan. 10, 2022 kicked off the beginning of the annual South Callaway tournament. The NHHS girls varsity basketball team made the trip to South Callaway for their games in the tournament on Monday, Wednesday, and for the last time for our seniors on Friday. For many this is their first trek to South Callaway, but for 4 of our basketball players it is their last time in this tournament. We took time this week to talk to some of the varsity Shamrocks and see how they were feeling about the tournament.
“Sad, but excited… I think that the seniors are starting to realize that the season is getting closer to ending,” senior Mackenzie Wilson said.
The tournament started off with a bang for the Shamrocks. Both teams won their first games to kick off the tournament.
“I would say we played well and we shot the ball well. Overall beside rough contact from the opposing team we played a good game,” senior Peyton Sumpter said.
“I feel proud. We played exceptionally as a team. It was some of the best basketball we played all season,” Sumpter said.
They girls ended up playing and taking the win against Russellville 71-50. Allowing them to play for the championship against Fatima.
“I am nervous since we are playing the #1 seed,” junior Tressa Carver said.
A lot of nerves were collected before the championship game, since Fatima was seeded number one within the tournament. Players felt eager to play in the championship game.
“I feel good, I think we are all excited to play in championship games since it is the first time in years,” Wilson said.
Even though the girls fell to Fatima, they played a hard game. The final score ended up being 19-13. The girls were awarded second place. at the South Callaway. This was a great way to wrap up the seniors final South Callaway tournament. These senior girls worked hard and truly showed their commitment to this program. The seniors set a great example for the underclassmen of what the tradition of excellence means. This is evident as many underclassmen have voiced how much they will miss playing with the seniors.
“It is a really good group of girls and we all get along,” Carver said.
