Four students-- senior Bernabe Ribera, senior Paige Remilard, junior Jasmine Canania, and Dori McCarty-- will be competing in an art drawing contest for their art class which began back in August, and will end on December 15th. There are also other schools participating in the same contest, which means the stakes are a lot higher than your average contest. The winner of the art contest will receive a $2000 cash prize. This art contest is being sponsored by Walgreens, which means it’s a really big contest with hundreds of schools participating.
There are a few basic rules for the contest-- for instance, there are no guns allowed in the drawings, no Walgreens logos, and so on. The rules are really basic, which gives the artists plenty of freedom to express themselves.
The contest is in brackets. The first round’s voting is open to the public. The second round is preliminary judging, and the third round is expert panel judging.
Bernabe Ribera is one of the four contestants participating in our school. He is doing the contest because he is interested in the cash prize. Bernabe is in his last year of school, so he would like to save up as much money as possible to give him a head start when he gets out into the real world.
Dori McCarty is one of the other contestants for our school. She is doing the drawing because she wants to express herself through her art, as well as her interest in the cash prize.
She adds, “I could use the money, as well as expressing my passion for art.”
Dori’s piece is not actually a drawing; she is creating a virtual representation on her computer. Dori said, “I thought I would do something different than everyone else.”
Bernabe said, “My parents are always pushing me to save money, so that is what I am going to do.”
Bernabe’s drawing is about his past life experiences and the obstacles he has had to go through in his life. Bernabe says, “My drawing is about society and has a deeper meaning to it.”
Jasmine Canania and Paige Remilard have also recently joined the competition and will be competing with Bernabe and Dori.
This contest is allowing students to express themselves in whatever way they want to. It is also giving them the opportunity to win $2000. Let’s wish the contestants good luck.
