On Monday, September 30, the New Haven varsity volleyball team played in the Hermann tournament. They lost their first game, with a final score of 7-25 and 6-25 against Borgia. Their second match lost against Owensville with 22-25 and 19-25. Finally, their last game was on Monday night with the loss of 18-25 and 15-25 against Pacific.
When asked what they thought the hardest part of this tournament was, McKenzie Pecaut, senior, said, “The hardest part was that we had some good competition and we [kind of] struggled to get a good handle over the games.”
When asked what she found challenging about playing against Borgia, Owensville, and Pacific, Mrs. Jaime Hoener, head coach, had this to say: “They were good teams, but our unforced errors caused were hard to take. We have to make teams beat us instead of us beating ourselves.”
Mrs. Julie Westermeyer, one of two assistant coaches, stated: “The bigger schools definitely had several aggressive attackers that can put the ball away. They were ready to play.”
Knowing that everyone makes mistakes, the players were asked what they could have done differently. Natalie Pecaut, a senior, said, “I feel we could have [run] a fast offense and done better on our defense. I think we also need to keep our energy up. Because even though volleyball is a very physical game, it is also a mental one as well. You can just bring your opponents down with your energy on the floor.”
Not only do the players have some comments on what they could have done better, but Mrs. Hoener commented that “we just need more consistency in all aspects of our game.”
