The New Haven Shamrocks boys and girls basketball teams competed in the South Callaway tournament, which was extended from January 7th to February 9th. The boys played Montgomery County on January 1st. Senior Ethan Groner scored a total of 24 points. The boys went on to win 49-44.
On January 10th, the boys played North Callaway. Ethan Groner, again, led the team in points scoring 20 of the team’s 48 points. They went on to win 48-36.
When Ethan was asked how he felt he played during the tournament, he stated, “I think that I have done the best I can to help the team win.”
The boys went on to play for the championship against Hermann. Despite many delays due to weather, the boys were finally able to play their game on February 9th. Ethan yet again led the team in points, scoring 15 of the 35 points. Hermann won 48-35.
Ethan was rewarded with first team all tournament.
The girls also played in South Callaway. Their first game was January 7th against Hermann. McKenzie Overschmidt, junior, and Claire Meyer, senior, led the team by each scoring 8 points. Totaling 16 of the team’s overall 24 points. The girls lost 68-24.
On January 9th, the girls played Montgomery County. Claire Meyer led the team, scoring a total of 11 of the team’s 31 points. The girls lost 62-31.
In the final game, the girls played North Callaway. McKenzie Overschmidt scored 11 of the team’s 32 points. The girls lost 36-32.
When Claire Meyer was asked how she felt the team competed in the tournament, she said, “I felt that we played better at the start of the tournament than at the end.”
Overall, the South Callaway tournament produced many memories for both the boys and girls. Good work, players!
