A celebration was held for Harry Potter's twentieth birthday on Thursday, November 8, at the Scenic Regional Library in New Haven, Missouri. There were snacks, games, and giveaways.
On June 26, 1997, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone was published. If you have not heard of the Harry Potter books, they describe the adventures of a young wizard named Harry Potter. As a baby, Harry defeated a dark wizard named Voldemort. Sadly, he lost his parents on the same night. When he turned eleven, Harry was able to attend Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Every year, Harry and his friends Ron and Hermione go on many different adventures while trying to study the school’s course materials.
At Scenic Regional Library’s celebration, fans of the books could come and get “sorted” by the Sorting Hat as well as get a pencil wand with a list of spells. The wands that were given out were replicas of the characters’ wands. Fans were also able to do a scavenger hunt with the Marauder’s Map, get his or her fortune told, and try some Bertie Bott’s Every Flavor Beans. People of all ages came to enjoy the festivities.
According to the staff working the celebration, they loved seeing everyone who dressed up. Joe, a staff member, liked being able to interact with all the other Harry Potter fans.
Mrs. Oelrichs, science teacher at New Haven high school, thought that the crafts were amazing and was happy that her daughter was having fun.
Sydney Grubb, sorted into Gryffindor House, commented, “All the magic is super cool to me.” She considers herself obsessed with Harry Potter, and her favorite character is Hermione Granger.
Emily Knoppe, of Hufflepuff House, reported loving the snacks at the celebration. Attendees were given some edible wands and butterbeer. Emily considers Dumbledore's Army to be better than Voldemort's Death Eaters.
Angela Kuhlmann, also a Hufflepuff, commented, “I thought that the celebration was pretty neat.” Angela has only watched the first two movies but considered them to be interesting.
The birthday celebration at the library in New Haven was one of many celebrations that happened all around the world. Thank you to the staff at the library for giving everyone a memorable experience.
