Both teams ended 2015 with a loss, New Haven to St. James, Union to Pacific. For one of the FRC teams, the start of the new year resulted in a win. By Ereka Bailey The Shamrock girls basketball teams faced the Pacific Indians on Monday, December 16. The junior varsity girls fought hard throughout the whole game, and it was a close game. With 7.2 seconds left of the game, the Shamrocks had the ball and the score was 26-30 with Pacific in the lead. Freshman Mackenzie Munsinger dribbled to the top of the key and went up for a three-pointer and made it, turning the score to 29-30 with Pacific still in the lead. Pacific had the ball with only about 2 seconds left of the game and tried to pass it down the court, but New Haven stole it back. By the time they could throw up a shot though, it was too late. The buzzer rang out and the game ended with Pacific at 30 points and the Shamrocks at 29. The varsity team had just about the same fight with the Indians. Three minutes into the game, the score was already 6-5, showing that it was going to be a close game if players all kept playing with determination. In the first quarter, scores went back and forth, but eventually Pacific took the lead of three points with the score 13-10. By Lauren Bergner On Tuesday, December 15th, the Shamrocks boys’ basketball team played their first Four Rivers Conference (FRC) game at home. Not only did this game mark the first FRC game, it was also the last home game for the boys in 2015. The night started with an intense double overtime game for the Junior Varsity. On the night, freshman Martin Lewis had 17 points, and junior Mark Senecal had 10. Although the Shamrocks had some big scorers, the Indians came out on top, overall winning 49-47. Going into the varsity match, the Shamrocks knew it was going to be tough. Senior Jared Horstmann stated, “In order to win, we needed to play a perfect game. But just working hard was our main focus. I was excited to get out on the court and play. It's kind of bittersweet playing this team one last time.” By Clare Roth The spirits were high Shamrock gym at the boys’ basketball game on Friday, December 11. As the Shamrocks raced out on the court to the tune of Jaws, students sat in highly adorned Christmas gear, anticipating a good game. The student section didn’t exactly get this Christmas wish. The Shamrocks lost 67-46 to the Montgomery County Wildcats. The game started with a deficit, with the Shamrocks trailing the Wildcats after the first quarter 20-12. The boys worked to close the gap, but never gained momentum, trailing 35-28 at halftime and 53-39 after the third quarter. Junior Will Soete led the Shamrocks with 14 points. Junior Brady Kruse followed with 10, with senior Andrew Menke close behind with 8. By Patricia Weatherly
The New Haven JV boys basketball team won consolation against Union in the last tournament. New Haven’s first game was against Pacific. Pacific defeated New Haven, 47- 32. New Haven’s second game was against Hermann. New Haven won the game 50-38. Players recite what Coach Viehland often says, "Anytime you win two games in a tournament and finish on a two game winning comeback, it’s a good tournament. ” Player Martin Lewis reported, “Man, did it feel good to finish on a winning streak after bouncing back to a tough loss to Pacific.” When asked about their expectations for the rest of the season, most players said they put in the hard work everyday to improve. Even though they work everyday, they still find the time to have fun. Good luck to the boys for the rest of their season! A special thank you goes out to the New Haven Girls Varsity Basketball team! The girls baked cookies and other sweet treats to raffle off at home games on Monday, December 7th, and Tuesday, December 8th. All money raised from the raffle was donated to the local Backpack Program, a program that helps send food home with less fortunate children in the community of New Haven so that these children have food to eat during weekends. In all, the girls varsity basketball team raised $175 for the cause. Thanks Shamrocks for helping out the community this holiday season!

The first varsity boys' basketball game of the season was played against the Belle tigers on November 24. Though the Shamrocks fought hard, they couldn’t take the Tigers down. At the end of the first quarter, it was all tied up between the two teams at eight points with Will Soete for the Shamrocks scoring four of the eight. Also in the first quarter, senior Zach Boehmer twisted his ankle when he came down from trying to rebound a ball. Boehmer came out of the game, and then returned later in the fourth quarter, but he was still not at 100%. In the second quarter, the Shamrocks fought hard, but couldn’t quite stay up to speed with Belle. The first half ended with the scores of 19 by Belle and 15 from New Haven. The third quarter was just about the same, ending with Belle at 29 and New Haven at 23. By Lauren Bergner

Thursday, October 29th marked the beginning of the 2015 Shamrock volleyball team’s journey to the Final Four. Before heading off to Cape Girardeau, the volleyball team was waved off by both the high school/middle school and the elementary. If the Shamrocks were to come in the top 2 in their pool, they would advance to the championship. But if the Shamrocks were to fall in the bottom 2 spots in their pool, they would drop to the 3rd and 4th place game. By Clare Roth
“STP!” the volleyball Shamrocks yell as they break from a pre-game huddle. They run to their respective spots on the court to beat Owensville in two sets. The girls repeat these three letters before their game versus Borgia, and then before Hermann, then Union. The Shamrocks have yelled “STP” in unison before every game so far this season. What does “STP” mean? And why are the girls repeating it over and over again? Through the course of the season, the volleyball team has become more or less defined by these three letters. The acronym is not a secret. If asked, any volleyball player will tell you that “STP” stands for “something to prove.” By Clare Roth

By LeeAnna Linton On Wednesday, October 7th, the New Haven Softball team hopped on the bus to head to their district game at Clopton against the Silex Owls. Wednesday was a very confusing day for all the teams in District 4. Earlier that day, a question arose about the Van-Far Indians’ eligibility to play due to a violation of a MSHSAA rule. When the violation was reported to MSHSAA, Van-Far was ruled ineligible to compete and was removed from the tournament. All the other teams moved up one seed, so New Haven was suppose to play Wellsville instead of Silex. By LeeAnna Linton
