Dennis Carey has been a well known and respected member of the New Haven School District for over 30 years. Mr. Carey attended high school here, and he has been teaching at the Home of the Shamrocks since 1985. For the seventh year in a row, young people in Missouri will have an opportunity to work outdoors at state parks and historic sites through the State Parks Youth Corps, Gov. Nixon announced today. Online applications are now being accepted for youth ages 17 to 24 to participate in the 2016 program.
Jefferson City, Mo. - The Missouri Department of Labor and Industrial Relations, along with members of the 98th General Assembly, honored the 104 Missourians who died in the workplace during 2015 at the annual Missouri Workers’ Memorial Ceremony today.
By Rachel Connell and Patricia Weatherly The annual Power of the Purse was held on Thursday, April 7, at Assumption School Hall to raise money for the United Way. This morning we departed from our hotel in Newport, Tennessee and drove an hour to the Biltmore Estate. After visiting the beautiful Biltmore Estate, the seniors stayed for lunch in Asheville, NC. After lunch, the seniors traveled 5 hours to the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, VA. After eating dinner, the seniors arrived at their hotel and went for a swim! Today, the senior class of 2016 departed for their Senior Trip at 4:40 A.M. The seniors stopped around 7:20 A.M. in Nashville, IL for breakfast. After a four and a half hour drive, the seniors stopped in Nashville, TN at the Opry Mills Mall for lunch. From there, the seniors traveled to their next destination, the University of Tennessee. At the home of the Volunteers, the seniors stopped for dinner. By 7:45 (eastern time), the seniors arrived at their final destination for the day, Newport, TN. Fun Fact: Today, the Shamrocks watched three movies: Pirates of the Caribbean, Footloose, and White House Down. May 2 is the deadline to apply for the STEM Scholars Academy that will be offered at East Central College this summer. STEM Scholars Academy is designed to help current high school students who might be interested in pursuing a science, technology, engineering or math (STEM) career prepare for college-level courses. Students who will be sophomores or juniors in the fall of 2016 are eligible to apply and must commit to completing the entire summer session and continue to meet with mentors throughout the 2016-17 school year. Students selected for the Academy will receive one credit hour of Independent Study from ECC. The cost is $95. JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – Gov. Jay Nixon today signed House Bill 1983 to prohibit statewide elected officials and members of the General Assembly from receiving compensation as paid political consultants for other state elected officials or candidates for those offices, as well as committees that support a candidate, issue or ballot measure. The measure is one of the ethics reforms that the Governor has called for each year he has been in office, including in the comprehensive plan he put forward in October.
The March Student of the Month is senior Jon Stone. Jon is the son of Jerry Stone and Jennifer Buwalda. He is active in cross country, track, FBLA, NHS,and is the senior class president. Even though the lines were long and busy, people still stood in lines at the Coaster Capital of Missouri to experience the set of g-forces each roller coaster has to offer. Many parents watch their kids go through four years of high school without realizing their kid is mentally ill. Mental illnesses are often go unnoticed because they are not as obvious as a physical illness. SHOE DRIVE FOR CLEAN WATER
What: NHE Service Leaders are sponsoring a shoe drive When: April 12th-April 29th Where: Shoes will be collected in the foyer by the Elementary office and at the High School and Middle School Office. There will be collection barrels in front of the Elementary school for after school and weekend hours. Why: Donated shoes equal clean water for people How: Shoeman Water Project collects donated shoes - any kind - new or used - and exports the shoes to street vendors in places like Kenya, Haiti and South America, providing affordable shoes and jobs for those communities. The funds from exporting are used for clean water projects in communities around the world. The Athletic Awards night has been scheduled for Tuesday, May 10, at 6:30 in the H.S. gym.
The Sullivan vs New Haven baseball game that was rained out on Thursday, April 7, has been rescheduled for Wednesday, May 4. The game will be played at New Haven with a 4:30 start time and will be a varsity only contest. There will not be a JV game played. At this time, that is the only contest that has been rescheduled. The National Blue Ribbon Award recognizes public and private elementary, middle, and high schools based on their overall academic excellence or their progress in closing achievement gaps among student subgroups. New Haven High School received this award in September 2015. JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – Following the release of pay equity best practices guidelines by the Women’s Foundation and the University of Missouri Institute of Public Policy, Gov. Jay Nixon today directed the Office of Administration to lead an interagency effort to review the final guidelines and make recommendations for promoting pay equity in the state workforce.
JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – Gov. Jay Nixon today visited the St. Louis Agency on Training and Employment to sign Executive Order 16-04, to lessen barriers to individuals with criminal histories attempting to enter the workforce, lower recidivism rates and improve public safety. The executive order will “ban the box” in state employment by placing questions relating to criminal history later in the hiring process in order to provide these applicants a fair opportunity to compete for jobs.
STONE COUNTY, Mo. – The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) reports James Wright of Cape Fair became the most recent record-setting angler in Missouri when he hooked a white bass on Table Rock Lake on a trotline. The new “alternative method” record white bass caught by Wright on April 6 weighed 3-pounds, 4-ounces with a length of 18 3/4 inches. Wright was using shad for bait to try to catch catfish, but instead he caught a state-record white bass. On April 10, at approximately 8:20 PM, deputies responded to Timber Trail Dr. and Whisky Creek Rd. for a report of shots fired. The reporting party advised that a male subject fired a weapon at people at their location, possibly two shots. The caller reported that the suspect had left the scene and gave a description of the vehicle.
Jefferson City, Mo. – Gov. Jay Nixon has ordered that the flags of the United States and the State of Missouri at all government buildings in Franklin and Gasconade counties be flown at half-staff on Tuesday, April 12, in honor of Lyndon D. Ebker, an employee of the Missouri Department of Transportation. Gavin Frick has been selected as the New Haven Middle School Student of the Month. Gavin is a hard worker in the classroom. He strives to do error-free work. His work is complete and accurate. Gavin gets along well with his peers and is respectful towards teachers. Gavin participates in track, basketball and is a member of the National Junior Honor Society. Outside school he enjoys sports, video games and reading. Gavin's future plans are to attend college and become a lawyer. Gavin is the son of Scott and Melissa Frick. Congratulations Gavin! |
