By: Diana Ribera On February 3, New Haven High School had its annual Homecoming dance after the boys’ basketball games. The dance ended at 11:30 P.M. The Homecoming dance played many styles of music from country love songs to rap and R&B. 74% of the freshmen, 78% of the sophomores, 62% of the juniors, and 79% of the seniors came to Homecoming. In total, 123 students showed up to the dance. The theme for Homecoming this year was the classic 1990’s TV show Friends. When asked for a comment about the Homecoming theme, LeeAnna Linton responded with, “I loved the theme because I am in love with the show Friends. I also loved the ‘90s theme, because my senior class is the last of the ‘90s babies!” Nicki Zeitzmann said, “I'm not a big fan of the show Friends, but since the theme was to honor us seniors as the last ‘90s class, I thought that was nice.” She was also asked what her favorite moment was and her response was that she enjoyed when Dominick Pataky (her boyfriend) started to break dance, since that was the first time she ever saw him do that. McKenzie Overschmidt commented that her favorite part of the dance was “when we were all in the circle of the dance floor, and everyone started to dance in the middle.” Jacob Wilson said that his favorite part was hanging out with his friends. Miranda Durbin, Nicki Zeitzmann, Makayla Jackson, and Audrey Ford said that they all enjoyed the addition of the photo booth this year. Alexander Trentmann commented “I loved the photo booth because I got to take pictures with friends, and was able to keep them to remember the great time I had.” By: Celesse Smedley
Many students at New Haven High School do not know what Four Rivers Career Center really is. Many students don’t know what the career center really provides and that it is way bigger than they think. At Four Rivers Career Center, they offer classes in building construction, automotive technology, graphic communications, teaching careers, Business Ignite, welding, collision repair, precision machining, information technology, health occupations, and the culinary arts. The building construction class covers many areas of construction such as making blueprints, electrical work, plumbing, masonry, carpentry, and some heavy equipment work. The automotive technology class works under the hood of the car, while collision repair works on the outside of the car to correct any damage. In graphic communications, you learn how to work certain programs on the computer such as Photoshop. You also can create t-shirts and hats in the class, as well as work with vinyl. Business Ignite is a program for students wanting to be entrepreneurs. In precision machining, you craft a variety of tools used in the manufacturing process. Then, in information technology, you learn about the hardware and networkings of a computer. Each year you attend FRCC, you receive half a credit of English, which might help with your class scheduling. Throughout your time at Four Rivers, they offer a great amount of college preparation by motivating you to check into colleges. They also host college nights where certain technical colleges come to the school. Ms. Maloney, the career resource educator, stated, “Students are given freedom and I feel students are treated more like adults than at other high schools. With that freedom comes higher responsibility and more expectations for the student. Students have to problem solve here, which is similar to how the the working world functions. Our instructors offer support, but make students figure things out for themselves after initial skills are taught. Students can work together to accomplish this.” Ms. Wieland, the college and career specialist, was quoted, “Four Rivers Career Center offers training for students to begin preparing for a career. The knowledge they receive from their traditional high school classes play a key element because FRCC instructors tie all of the core subject knowledge into work-like situations. She continued by saying, “The environment at FRCC is different than the high schools. Here, the classrooms are set up to model the workplace and students are being trained and treated like employees. Our hands-on students seem to prefer this atmosphere. A partnership between sending schools is important for students because students receive training on equipment that is costly; therefore, it makes sense for our school to purchase it and students from 10 sending schools to benefit from it.” Loraine O’Brien, a senior at Washington High School, commented, “I really like Four Rivers. I think it’s a great opportunity and it’s like a free, college-level class. If you take it both years, you can go and work professionally, immediately after high school. It’s kind of chaotic sometimes but other times low key, but overall it’s really fun and I enjoy it.” Four Rivers Career Center hosts tours if you are interested in learning more about the program. Check with Mr. Peirick to learn more about shadowing at the school, and how you can get involved with the Four Rivers Career Center. Important Note: A Four Rivers representative will be here Thursday, February 16, at 1:15 for any student interested in attending next year. If you are interested in the presentation, contact Mr. Peirick by Tuesday. By: Jake Wilson
With the season winding down to the final 3 games, the Shamrocks are beginning to prepare for the district tournament. New Haven will be hosting districts this year for the first time since 2014. Districts for the girls will begin Friday, February 18th, at one o'clock with the #4 seed Crystal City (8-14) taking on #5 seed Silex (5-9). That game will be followed by #2 seed McKinley (10-8) facing #7 seed Collegiate School of Med Bio-Science (4-7) at 2:30. The final opening round game will feature #3 seed Elsberry (9-13) versus #6 Crossroads College Prep (6-11). Elsberry is back in Class 2 after being a size Class 3 school for the past few years. Due to New Haven receiving the #1 seed (16-7), our Shamrocks have received a first round-bye and will play the winner of Crystal City and Silex in the semi-finals on Tuesday, February 21st, at 5:30. The district championship game will be Friday, February 24th, at 5:30. Coach Doug Peirick commented on the outlook for districts: “Right now we need to focus on these last few games. We have played and competed very well against some great teams recently. I think we have a really good chance of winning districts, but we have to stick to our style of play.” When asked about the opportunity of hosting districts, he also stated, “It’s a real plus for us. We don’t have to take any long bus rides and have to be back home late. The other advantage is that our girls are really comfortable in our own gym, and it gives our fans an opportunity to be there. Hopefully we have big crowds each night, so we can bring home the title for us and the community.” When senior Brooklyn Covington was asked about hosting districts, she replied, “I would want it no other way than to be able to play on Ray Steinhoff Court one more time. And the opportunity for the last game at home to be remembered as walking off our home court with a district championship would be something I would truly forever cherish.” Good luck, ladies! (See brackets below for full tournament scheduling information.) By: Ethan Groner Last Friday, February 3rd, the New Haven Shamrocks played their conference rival, the Union Wildcats, at home. The boys lost a very close game to the Wildcats 56-47, although they outscored them in the first quarter-- 12-8. The boys game was preceded by the Homecoming coronation. The coronation was topped with Brooklyn Covington winning queen, Kenzie Bauer receiving first runner-up, and Taylor Oetterer receiving second runner-up. Immediately following this, the pep band started playing and the players came out. Justin Shockley led the Rocks with 25 points-- a career high. He made the Rocks’ only three-pointer of the night, and also had 4 rebounds. Junior John Fleer also had 10 points. Fellow seniors Zack Vedder and Mark Senecal followed with 4 points apiece. Mark also had 4 assists, as did sophomore Martin Lewis. Sophomore Mason Johnson quoted, “It was a really close game. There was a great chance that they could’ve won, but they couldn’t hit the big shots at the end to do so.” Fellow sophomore Martin Lewis also quoted, “We played hard and had our chances. However, we didn’t capitalize, and it hurt us in the end.” Freshman Meagan Holtmeyer stated, “It was a really exciting game. We were really close to winning, and that’s something to be proud of.” The boys only have 3 more games left in their regular season before having district play. This past Tuesday, they played the St. Clair Bulldogs at the Dogs’ place and lost in a pretty close game. Tonight, they have a home conference game against the Owensville Dutchmen. Good luck, boys!

The New Haven Middle School Student Council is planning to raise money this month by selling "Sham-grams". Student council member Matthew Otten, who helped plan the project, commented that "it was pretty fun when we did it in elementary school." They will be selling Sham-grams on Friday, Feb. 10 and Monday, Feb. 13 in the cafeteria for 25 cents each. STUCO has chosen to donate their earnings to the New Haven and Arizona Care Centers. Each Sham-gram will have a positive message and candy for the students. They will be delivered during lunch on Feb. 14th. STUCO hopes the fundraiser will help let its students at school and at the care centers know that others care about them! 6th Grade girls basketball team finished their season on a high note medaling in their last two tournaments at Owensville and Hermann. On January 28th, the 6th grade girls won Consolation at the Owensville Tournament. The team lost their opening round game to Steelville where they were down by 10 points in the 4th quarter and made a run at the end but came up short 22 to 25. In their second game they beat Owensville 41 to 14 to advance to the Consolation game where New Haven beat St. Clair 27 to 25. This year NHHS has something new to offer students, which would be the pep squad. New Haven High School’s pep squad are the people who have attended every game to support our Shamrock teams. The pep squad is something that anyone in our high school can join. It's also a great way to show support to NHHS sports teams. Head of the pep squad, Emma Engelbrecht, was asked how effective she thinks the pep squad is, she responded, “ I always just wanted the fan sections to be louder and participate. We were always able to get lots of students at the games, but it was hard to get them to actually cheer. So I figured by making an organized group that is required to cheer, it brings more energy to the games and helps the cheerleaders a lot! I think it is very effective because if the fans are yelling and get into the game, the players do as well and there have already been several players who have said how much more fun it was to play with the student section behind you! I owe a lot of thanks to Mrs. Laune for helping me get it all organized and being such a great help with it all!” Not only do these students show up to cheer on our NHHS Shamrocks, they also went the extra mile and made shirts. These shirts were available to everyone who joined the squad. The shirts are white, black, and green and have the quote “Love us or fear us, either way you're gonna hear us.” Member of the pep squad, Liz Hughes, said, “Being a part of such a high-spirited group really makes me proud to call myself a Shamrock!” Brooklyn Covington, player on the girls varsity team, always makes sure to be at the boys’ games to cheer New Haven’s teams on. She said, “I’m so glad we brought back the pep squad. I think it's a great way to support our NHHS Shamrocks!” According to the students, it’s not just something the players look forward to. Taylor Oetterer, senior at NHHS, comments, “The pep squad is a great way to spread school spirit through the entire high school!” Mr. Hoener, superintendent of New Haven High School, was asked what his views on the pep squad were, and he replied, “I am for any activity that increases student involvement in our school. I am excited that students took the initiative to create a new club and look forward to seeing it grow.” The high school’s pep squad is something that has become a tradition and is sure to last. This is why New Haven High School is known for its “Tradition of Excellence”. By: Mackenzie Wilson

Mrs. Schlafer is the American Government, Current Events, Health, and Geography teacher. She’s been teaching for forty-four years. Mrs. Schlafer graduated from Southeast Missouri State in 1973. Her degree is a Bachelor of Science degree with a double major in history and sociology. She says she has always been fortunate enough to teach social studies and to be a secondary social studies teacher. For fun, Mrs. Schlafer likes to read, garden, bake, go bowling with her husband, and bike. Her favorite movie is the Harry Potter movie series. She likes to watch The Big Bang Theory as well. One of her pet peeves is when a student borrows something but doesn't put it back in the right place when they return it. When asked what inspired her to become a teacher, she responded, “I always enjoyed school, and my World History teacher was very interesting.” Mrs. Schlafer next commented on why she wanted to work in New Haven and what her favorite thing about it is: “My husband was the elementary principal and we wanted to work in the same school district. The size of the school allows the teachers and students to interact on a one to one basis when they need help. I also am inspired by how the students strive to achieve good grades and to do the best in competitions.” Mrs. Schlafer was questioned what she is passionate about, and she replied with, “I suppose teaching is my passion. I am in my 44th year of teaching, and I still enjoy every day because everyday is unique.” “It has been amazing to see the changes in education through the years,” Mrs. Schlafer commented. “Technology has definitely made teaching different.” Thank you, Mrs. Schlafer, for being a part of the Tradition of Excellence. We are proud to call you a Shamrock. By: Celesse Smedley
With almost four months of high school left for the 2017 senior class, some classmates will choose the college life and some will choose the workforce. The following students were asked the same questions: Are you going to college? What college? Why did you chose it? And what advice would you give to younger classes? Emma Eichelberger stated, “Yes, I will be attending ECC. I will be able to keep my job at Citizens Bank while using my A+ money for schooling.” As far as advice, Emma asserted, “I would say just know your likes and dislikes and go from there.” Kim Hoffmann expressed, “I am going to college, to East Central College and then to Central Methodist University. I chose college because in order to be successful in my career I have to go to college.” Kim gave some advice also: “If college is going to help you with your career, then go to college! Don't waste your money just because you feel like you have to go. Only go if it will benefit you. Which for the most part, it will. Don't be afraid of the future. Embrace it and move on! While you may miss the past, you are about to start the next chapter in your life.” Kate Weiser voiced, “Yes, Missouri State University. I would like to get away from New Haven and learn as much as I can independently.” Her advice to younger classes is, “Make a schedule of college visits and ask questions while you're there. If you don't have time for that, just do what you would do with anyone you want to know more about-- stalk them online. College social media sites are run by kids just a few years older than you and provide all the info you need to know. Also you do not need to go into college knowing exactly what you want from it. Freshman year of college you can pick classes you truly enjoy and maybe declare your path by the end of the year. About 20-50% of students now are undecided. So just breathe, and chase what your heart desires.” By: LeeAnna Linton
